Birmingham

The UK's second-largest city

Birmingham is the UK’s second-largest city and home to an incredible diversity of people, businesses, cultural sites, opportunities and everything else you want to see in a 21st-century city.

The city is built on a legacy of industrial strength that gives a unique sense of place and an appeal to both people and businesses. Increasingly seen as an alternative to London, Birmingham is building on strong foundations.

Now, a once-in-a-lifetime series of investments from the 2022 Commonwealth Games to the HS@ high-speed rail line and many more have given Birmingham a unique opportunity to step forward onto the world stage - and the city has taken its chance.

Birmingham Economy

Birmingham has proven its economic resilience in recent years. The 2023 Birmingham Economic Review, led by the University of Birmingham, City REDI and the Birmingham Economic Chambers of Commerce, shows that the Greater Birmingham area generates more than £55bn annually, with the city itself having a GDP of approximately £27.8bn.

Key employers in the city include major national and international firms such as Amazon, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, Jaguar Land Rover, Nuffield Health, Deloitte, Mondelez International, the National Grid and many more.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has ranked Birmingham as the UK’s most investible city, and in recent years, the region has received more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) than anywhere else in the UK outside London.

"We chose to locate our new head office here because it’s a dynamic and entrepreneurial region, offering an attractive home for businesses and people at the heart of the UK."

Birmingham’s major regeneration areas

Birmingham’s recent history is one of transformation from an industrial core city into a true 21st-century destination that is bringing people from across the country and the world. This was made possible by a range of major regeneration works.

Big City Plan - A major 20-year regeneration plan turning the city centre on its head

Smithfield - Described as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to transform a 17-hectare site in the centre of the city

Jewellery Quarter - One of the city’s most important locations, it has served for centuries as the centre of Britain's jewellery manufacturing trade.
